Narconon Stone Hawk Rehabilitation Center
The name "Stone Hawk" comes from Kate Wickstrom's Native American heritage. The 100-bed facility is located on the shore of St. Mary's Lake just north of beautiful Battle Creek, Michigan. They started accepting students in February, and by the time of the Grand Opening on June 28th, they already had 45 students in their
treatment program!
The opening ceremony started with Dominick Fortuna singing the national anthem, followed by a Native blessing by Steve Gronda, Chief of the Wyandot band of the Anderdon Nation. Per Wickstrom, Narconon Stone Hawk's President, acting as Master of Ceremonies, first introduced Mike Nofs and Lorence Wenke, both from the Michigan State House of Representatives. Each spoke and then together presented a proclamation signed by them and the Governor proclaiming June 28, 2003 as Narconon Stone Hawk Day. The next speaker was Greg Moore, representing U.S. Congressman Nick Smith, followed by Yvonne Rodgers, Executive Director Narconon Eastern U.S., who read excerpts from letters by U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin.
Dr. Stephen Robinson, Narconon Stone Hawk's Medical Director, told the attendees how impressed he was with the results of the program. Kate told her story, and then introduced Aaron Mayer, Narconon Stone Hawk's first graduate, who shared his wins. Balloons were released and the ribbon was cut!
The 300-plus guests toured the facility and enjoyed the barbecue, entertained by Dominick Fortuna and his band. At 4:00 p.m. the attendees gathered around a specially-constructed roof covered with live boughs on poles under which four Native American men sang traditional songs accompanied by a drum. At the same time, three Marines raised the Flag. Then Jack Chambers, a Native American medicine man, performed a ritual blessing of the land. Immediately thereafter, three hawks circled overhead, a bolt of lightning hit the lake, and a sudden downpour ensued. The land was indeed cleansed!
The local ABC TV station filmed the ceremony and interviewed various executives and the graduate who spoke. Their 3-minute clip was the news leader that evening, thus letting thousands more know about this welcome addition to their community.
